There are a lot of different people who have plant in their home. Many people like to have plants in the house. This is because it gives a little cosiness and it brings some green into the house. Many people do not have this anymore. Unfortunately, there can also be a nasty side to having plants in the house. Sometimes there are flies in your plant and then you wonder where these flies come from. You want your house to be clean and you do not want flies in your house. What do you do with the flies in your plant?

What are those flies?

Flies in a plant is very troublesome. When you have visitors, for example, all kinds of flies can pass through the house. This is not something you want. They are actually mourning flies or mosquitoes. There are many different names for these flies. 

The flies in themselves are not very dangerous. This is because they come to the wet soil of your plant. They are attracted by the soil and lay their eggs in it. The flies are not very dangerous, but the eggs of a fly are dangerous for your plant.

The moment the eggs of a fly hatch, larvae will hatch. These larvae get into the roots and eat all the roots of your plant. In this way all plants will eventually die if they are eaten for too long. 

So it is certainly important that when you see this kind of flies that you fight them or that you check if the soil is not too wet. This ensures that the flies can continue to live.

After the flies have laid the eggs, it takes about a couple of hours before the larvae hatch. Eventually they hatch. It takes about 3 weeks before more flies will appear, because the larvae then grow into flies. This is of course very annoying, because you will get all kinds of flies again and again and again they will not go away. 

This is because the flies keep laying eggs. If you have a large plant, your plant should not die too quickly, but if the plant is still really small and in the process of growing, there is a big chance that your plant will not survive.

How do you get rid of it?

Now the question is, how do you get rid of these flies? Because you want to get rid of them as soon as possible. At the moment that flies fly around your plant, the goal is to get rid of them as soon as possible. Fortunately, you can get rid of these flies and eventually you will not have flies in your house anymore. This is, of course, what you want to achieve when you start hunting for flies. 

There are different ways to get rid of these flies. This is of course very nice, because this way one way might not work for you, but another way does. It is just as important to test out the way. If it does not work, you can try the other way.

The easiest way is to keep the soil dry and not give the plant too much water. In this way, the flies will go away pretty soon. This is because the flies like a lot of warmth and moisture. Therefore, it is important to keep the potting soil dry and not to constantly throw water on it.

You could also go for another kind of solution. That is by buying nematodes. These are very small worms. You buy them in a powder form and that way if you throw them in the potting soil where the flies are, all flies will be eaten or die. This is of course very nice, because you will have no more trouble with this and there will be no more plague of flies. 

In the meantime, you can also hang up sticky notes so that all the gnats and flies stick to them. But this would not solve the problem, but it would reduce it. That way you can keep an eye on whether the flies and mosquitoes are getting less and less because there are always flies or mosquitoes stuck to them. In this way you can also prove that the problem is solved.

It is important that you take a look for yourself which solution is going to work for you and if it is going to work. Many people think that only replacing the soil will help. This is often not the case, because the moment you replace the soil and make it wet, the flies will start to sit in it again.

That is why it is very important that you do approach it in a different way than just replacing potting soil. Otherwise it can end up in all your other plants. And of course you do not want to lose all your plants to that. So it is best to do a rough approach. It is best to do this in one go so it is easier to get rid of it in the end.
